Looking for help when our computer is slow can be tough. Finding computer system problems or determining if it's a slow Internet connection can be challenging. Simply put, we will need to know if the root cause is our Broadband service provider speed or if our computer is slow and messing up. A frequent indicator is when the internet websites we are searching download really slowly.
To help find the problem there are some easy things you can try yourself. A personal computer has a feature referred to as the Task Manager. It is quick to get to by clicking right on the bottom toolbar of the desktop screen and from the pop-up menu and click on "Task Manager".
Across the bottom of the Task Manager screen is a bar that reads: "Processes", "CPU Usage" and "Physical Memory". These are the number of computer process currently active and running, the percent being used of the CPU's (or "central processing unit) capacity and the amount of short-term memory storage (or RAM) used.
When a PC's CPU Usage stays higher than 70 to 75 percent for very long it will slow down the computer's speed on the Internet as well as other functions. And also if the RAM or Physical Memory being used by the processor is above around 60 to 70 percent it can cause it to appear like a slow internet connection problem. This can be compared to a storage room at your house that is just too full and crowded and it takes more time to find the things you are needing.
Another common problem affecting our browsing and overall computer performance is Window's Host errors. Have you have seen a pop-up saying that Windows Service Hosts has had a problem and was shut down? The Host Process for Windows Services is better known as the svchost.exe (or SvcHost). There are several of these "hosts" also listed in Task Manager.
The use of Hosts is one of the many methods Windows uses to speed up our computer's operation by combining "services" together that are used together. The organization of functions is important to help our computer run faster and help slow internet connection problems.
These hosting errors are caused by conflicts that may be the result of a virus that has infected your PC. Some Trojan viruses and some worms use a svchost as their hiding place and can be hard to locate and remove. If you find this error box popping up on your computer very often you need to run a complete system or "boot" virus scan.
